What to Do First: The Scam Alert
Before you do anything else, you must know this one fact that will save you money and protect your identity:
The only official place to get your card is through SSA.gov or at your local Social Security office.
How to Replace a Lost Card
If you've lost your card but your name hasn't changed, you may be able to order a replacement online in minutes.
Check Your Online Eligibility
Log into your "my Social Security" account at SSA.gov. Most people in most states can order a replacement card online if they have a valid State ID or Driver's License.
Wait for the Mail
Once ordered, your card will arrive by mail within 10 to 14 business days. It will come in a plain white envelope from the Social Security Administration.
Changing Your Name on Your Card
If you've married, divorced, or had a legal name change, you must update your Social Security card before you can update your Driver's License or file your taxes.
Gather Original Documents
You need your marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order. It must be an original or a certified copy (not a photocopy).
Fill Out Form SS-5
This is the "Application for a Social Security Card." You can download it from SSA.gov or get one at the office.
Visit or Mail
You must take your form and original documents to a local SSA office. For name changes, you usually cannot do this online.
Applying for a New Card (First Time)
If you are applying for a Social Security number for the first time (for yourself or a child), the process is more rigorous.
Dr. Ed's Security Hacks
"I've seen thousands of people come into the office after losing their card. My #1 tip? Stop carrying your card in your wallet. You almost never need to show the physical card. Memorize the number and keep the card in a safe, fireproof place at home. Most identity theft starts with a lost wallet containing a Social Security card."
